Altoona – County residents will be able to end their holiday season a bit greener this year, thanks to a number of recycling opportunities across the region. The IRC Recycling Office is working with local partners and municipalities to offer recycling of Christmas lights, cardboard and gift boxes, gift wrap, plastic bags and film, old electronics and Christmas trees. All of these materials can be recycled at the Buckhorn Recycling and Compost Facility during regular business hours. Other drop-offs have been set-up for certain materials.
Christmas Lights will be accepted for recycling at a number of local hardware stores. Residents can recycle strands of lights at the following locations: IRC Recycling & Compost Facility - Blacksnake Road, Dysart, City Hall offices - 12th Street, Altoona, Leydig True Value Hardware - Bedford Street, Hollidaysburg, Logan Township Municipal Building – Chief Logan Circle, Altoona, Helsel Hardware - Plank Road, Altoona, Ace-Fix-It Hardware - Logan Avenue, Tyrone, Roaring Spring Department Store - Rt. 36, Roaring Spring, Duncansville Borough Building - 3rd Avenue, Duncansville, Long's Outpost - Cove Mountain Road, Martinsburg
Packaging Drop-off - The IRC is once again hosting the holiday drop-off at the Logan Valley Mall on December 26 – December 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Folks are encouraged to bring all their gift boxes, cardboard boxes, wrapping paper and plastic bags to the drop-off. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept Styrofoam or rigid plastics at the drop-off event this year.
Electronics - The IRC operates an electronics drop-off at the Buckhorn Recycling & Compost Facility every day during regular business hours. Materials accepted include: computers, monitors, TVs, game systems, keyboards, laptops, and almost anything with a cord. We are unable to accept Freon containing appliances.
Live Undecorated Christmas Trees will be collected at the curbside in Hollidaysburg and Tyrone Boroughs. Hollidaysburg Borough will be collecting at the curbside on January 6, 7, 13, and 14. Tyrone Borough will collect on January 14 & 15. Martinsburg Borough will also have a curbside collection. City of Altoona and Logan Township residents can drop-off trees at the City highway yard on 6th Avenue or the Township highway yard at Chief Logan Circle. Both of the IRC Recycling and Compost Facilities will be accepting trees for a free-drop-off. The Duncansville Facility will be open on January 7 and January 14 from noon to 5 p.m.
