Rails to Trails Lower Trail

Posted in Recreation, Parks and Nature in Blair County, PA

DoubleBridgesonLowerTrailThe Lower Trail of the Rails to Trails project is 16.5 miles long.  The Lower Trail is owned and maintained by the Rails-to-trails Conservancy of Central PA (RTTCPA). The trail's 8ft. wide surface consists of smooth crushed stone.  The trail follows the old Railroad trails along the Juniata River in West-Central Pennsylvania. The completed trail starts just outside of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania along the Frankstown branch of the Juniata River in Blair County and continues 16.5 miles following the path of the abandoned Petersburg branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and ending at the town of Alfarata in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.
The trail is open year round and free to the public. People come from all over to  bicycle, hike, bird-watch, cross-country ski, or horseback ride along the trail. People also have easy access to the Juniata River from the trail to go fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.  The portion of the Lower Trail from Alfarata to Williamsburg is part of the Pennsylvania Mid State Trail and Great Eastern Trail. The trail in 2001 was identified as an important bird area by the Ornithological Technical Committee. No matter what your recreational prefereces are there is something for everyone along the Rails-to-trails in Pennsylvania.
